We want to inform our customers about a rising scam involving mobile phones being delivered through the mail. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself.
How the Scam Works
Fraudsters are impersonating employees from legitimate mobile companies and reaching out to customers via cold calls. They offer upgrades or new contracts that customers might agree to. However, instead of fulfilling the order as requested, they select a different phone and have it shipped to the customer’s address.
Once the customer receives the phone, the scammers will claim it was a mistake and instruct the customer to return the device to a non-affiliated residential address. The fraudsters then intercept the returned phone, leaving the customer without a device and liable for the new phone’s cost.
Please be vigilant for customers who are attempting to return phones to residential addresses.
What to Do If You Spot This Scam
- Inform the Customer: Explain the details of the scam to the individual.
- Encourage Direct Contact: Advise them to reach out to their mobile phone company using an official phone number.
